http://www.theastronomer.org/comets.html
Rare Appulse of Two Comets on July
20
After receiving an email from the BAA I contacted Paul Downing to see if was possible to image this event as the observatory is closed for the moment because of building the second observatory. Paul was very enthusiastic and spent quite a time on discussions and setting up his telescope and camera. We had a very successful night at his observatory and some good images were taken. For the first time for both of us we decided to send some of the images to the BAA and The Astronomer and received a very good response from both. The Astronomy has put the montage on there web site comets.html and Paul has put a selection on his http://www.paulandliz.org/Latest_Images/Default.htm . He has also produced a movie of the event. It was a very satisfying experience and we intend working together again. I will also take this opportunity to mention a book that Paul was involved in. The Arp Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies by J. Kanipe and D. Webb published by William Bell. Paul was responsible a lot of the images included and also was involved in the production of the book. It is a very good book for serious observers. The only fault I could find was that is that it is not suitable to be used outside when it is a little damp as the pages are glossy (to show the high quality images). I keep my copy in doors for reference but I am tempted to buy a second copy for the observatory. I will be creating a review page shortly and I will expand my thoughts on this book there.

| La Muerte de Brian Williams - el Astrónomo
Local

The Death of Brian Williams - Local Astronomer A short while ago a local UK
astronomer here passed away. His name was Brian Williams. He and his wife
Cheryl Power had been in my area for six years and had built the best
observatory in the area. This was not their first observatory. Their main
one was known as the Powys Observatory which Brian was responsible for its
design and most of its construction including the 13" triplet and
telescope mount. The observatory is now the headquarters of Spaceguard UK
http://www.spaceguarduk.com/index.htm.
Cheryl was kind enough to
contact me and ask if I would be willing to transfer the observatory
to my farm. Cheryl and Brian had been partners in life and astronomy and
she felt that it would not be the same to continue astronomy without him
but she wanted the fruits of their work to be used. I have accepted the
offer as it is an honour to do so.
Their Spanish observatory has a
Pulsar 3 meter dome and contains a 14" Celestron with Fastar mounted on a
GEM of Brian's own design and controlled by an AWR system. It has a C5
guidescope. There are a number of CCD Cameras including an FLI Maxcam CM2
with a computer controlled filter wheel and focuser. There is also a
Stellacam EX.
As well as the observatory
there is a Questar 7" mounted on a Alter D6 GEM.
Finally there is the telescope
that Brian was working on at the time of his death. Using
a 6" F9 triplet made by Roland Christen he was making a Grubb
mounted telescope. His design is based on the telescope that Geering
designed for Harvard. It is an usual design in the sense that the
telescope is in a fixed position with the polar axis passing
through the tube (eyepiece to lens). The top end of the telescope
(eyepiece end) is within the building. There is an equatorially mounted
mirror in front of the objective lens which is controlled by a
handset from within the building. There is an obvious restriction on
the area of sky you can see however there are numerous benefits of having
such a mount. Because the telescope is fixed there is no limit to the
amount of equipment you can add at the eyepiece end.
It goes without saying that
Brian was a man that anybody with an interest in telescopes and astronomy
would like to have as a friend and was in many ways on par with Croydon's
Norman Fisher.
I have not said much about Cheryl. In the
partnership Cheryl was the public face and the astronomer to Brian the
designer, technician and engineer. That is not to say that Cheryl could
not be technical as well. She has made, amongst other things, a 6"
Camera Obscura and their house here is quite unique in having a camera
obscura room built into the design of the house.
The end of the story is that I
am going to build a second building ajoining the current
observatory. On it I will be putting the 3 meter dome and
within it the 14" Celestron on Brian's mount. The new observatory
will be named "The Brian Williams Observatory". The Questar will be
mounted on the second column in the original building. I have not yet
decided whether I will buy the Christen Triplet, but I do intend to finish
the project that Brian had started using the Geerish design and
Brian's notes.

New Observatory on the Contraviesa Paul and Liz Downing have built an observatory as part of their final phase cortijo restoration project. It will give them the perfect location to continue high definition and high quality deep sky imaging. The link to their main site is in the Observatory section. Here is the link to their overall project. You can tell by the number of images devoted to the observatory that someone thought that the observatory was the most important part.
