  • How do we achieve such a high success rate?

In short, it is our training methods. Most candidates, when they arrive for the course, have no previous experience of book-keeping. Each new topic area begins with step-by-step explanation and examples, followed by practice exercises. At the end of each topic, each candidate is able to complete a previous exam question. This training method ensures firm understanding, develops confidence and a sense of achievement with each topic area. So, although the course is indeed intensive - the immediate feedback for each piece of work allows the candidates to correct any minor mistakes they make. We limit the course to only 5 candidates to ensure everyone has enough time to take in the new concepts and methods, and that there is time for feedback.

Why don't we offer this course as distance learning?

We are the only organisation in the UK running this course as an intensive, tutor-led course. According to the statistics, the pass rate for candidates sitting the examination and who have studied through distance learning, is as low as 54%. In contrast to this, the pass rate of our tutor-led, intensive course is 100% with 66% of our candidates achieving a credit and 33% achieving a distinction. These facts serve to reinforce our belief in the quality of our course, and the value of the teacher/student close working relationship with immediate feedback.
How is the course marked and certificated?

At the end of each topic, after thorough practice, the candidates complete exercise questions which are assessed in-line with the ICB marking system. During the last 2 days of the course, we run 2 mock exam sessions. This gives the candidates a feel for how the real exam will be. Each mock exam is assessed against the ICB system and the marks are added to those of the assessed course-work. Each candidate receives a course certificate indicating their achievement.

Do I have to take the ICB examination?

No, if you don't want to, or have no need to, take the examination, you can certainly say no! Some candidates attend the course because they need the knowledge to help manage their own company - so they don't need the ICB exam certificate. However, we have found that everyone so far has taken the exam - even if it's just for the challenge and the achievement.
Will I be cramming for 10 hours a day - will I get information overload?

The course runs from 9am-5pm, but depending on the day's progress, we usually break before 4pm. Normally, we have a 1¼ hour lunch break, and breaks during the day. This pace allows the candidates time to refresh before moving on. You can expect to be working for 2/3 hours each evening. 'Intensive' does not, in our case, mean 'stressful' - the teaching method and extensive course materials are designed to make it easy to digest.

What opportunities are there for qualified book-keepers?

Some successful candidates start their own business offering book-keeping services to sole traders/small businesses. The government state that the backbone of the UK economy is supported by small businesses. Just think about how many of these there are in your area - flick through a telephone directory - there are thousands in every area! Book-keepers are much cheaper than accountants and small businesses are always on the look-out for ways to save their profits.

Other candidates secure a better job in a local company, and practice the full book-keeping responsibility by keeping the books of their spouse, or relations and sometimes social clubs.

Yet other candidates, already running their own small business, are now able to keep their own accounts and understand the financials of the business.
Will this course help me study for an accountancy career?

Your ICB qualification can be accredited as prior learning ("APL" in educational institution jargon), which means you will not have to study the same material again. So, your two-week investment in our ICB intermediate course enables some colleges to cut your 3 year accountancy course schedule by a whole college year!
